I recently took a break from work and writing and spent the day at a pig roast.

My wife’s uncle, Tom, is the man responsible for starting the great festivity. It’s an annual event in the fall at his house in Ventura County. He told me he’s been doing it now for 5 or 6 years. This was my first time.

It’s a gathering of Tom’s neighbors, family and friends. And it’s usually attended only by men.

Tom said the fire for the roast usually begins around 5 or 6 am in a large pit in his backyard. The pig, which weighed over 70 pounds, and other meats go into the pit a few hours after that and stays there until about 5 pm. The result was fantastic. The meats were absolutely delicious; some of the best pork I’ve ever had. It was sweet, tender and succulent.

The whole thing reminded me of a luau my wife and I attended during our honeymoon on Maui. Both were great and I can’t wait to go back next year.
