Great weekend.
Saturday started off nicely with a quick morning round of golf with my writing partner at the short 9-hole, 3-par course at Weddington in Studio City. It’s one of my favorites. The course is well-kept, the vibe is laid-back and it’s relatively affordable.
I have a terrible swing and my game is even worse, but I love being out there (even in the drizzle). It was my first time golfing this year; better late than never, I guess.

I met up with my wife later and we decided to spend the evening with a movie and then having dinner. She told me that the nearby revival theater, the New Beverly Cinema, was showing Vittorio De Sica’s masterpiece “The Bicycle Thieves.” I remember watching it in film school and really admiring it. We thought about checking it out, but I remembered it being such a sobering downer that we decided instead to go see Ben Affleck’s new movie “Argo” at the Grove.
If you don’t know what “Argo” is about, here’s the trailer:
This isn’t a comedy either, but we left the theater satisfied with our movie choice. My wife and I were really impressed. It’s solid work by Affleck and screenwriter Chris Terrio. The entire audience seemed riveted with the dramatization of the thrilling rescue story.
How could the night get any better? How about a romantic late night spaghetti carbonara dinner at Lucques? I love Lucques. I love the spaghetti carbonara at Lucques. It’s the only thing I’ve ever eaten there. And it’s the only thing I ever want to eat there. I have no idea what they put in that pasta dish that makes it so magically delicious (maybe crack?), but after having it again this weekend, I’ve firmly secured it in my top ten favorite food dishes of all-time. The cream. The egg. The cheese. The pancetta. It’s all so good it’s ridiculous.

If you ever find yourself in West Hollywood out late at night and in need of some comfort, do yourself a favor: find Lucques on Melrose, ask for the bar menu and order the spaghetti carbonara. It’s a steal at $16. Before you even try it, let me just say it to you now: you’re welcome.
