It was Oscar night.
I don’t generally like award shows so I don’t usually watch them. If I do watch any of them, it’s usually the Grammys because I enjoy watching the musical acts. I obviously have an interest in cinema and the movie business, but watching the Academy Awards doesn’t really interest me. I watched this year for only one reason: U2, my favorite rock band of all-time, performed “Ordinary Love” from the Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

I also made my wife fill out an Oscar pool sheet so we could see which one of us could do better at predicting the winners. I started this last year and won pretty easily; she ended up having to buy me dinner at Lucques. I talked her into filling out another Oscar sheet this year. Last year, I just checked the results the day after the show. This year — because U2 were performing — we decided to keep score during the telecast. In honor of the event, I also decided to make dinner: mac and cheese. I’ve had a craving for some good mac and cheese for awhile so I figured this would be a good night to find a good recipe and try it.

It turned out that the mac and cheese was the night’s big winner. I didn’t care much for the Oscar telecast, it seemed kind of aimless and dull. I enjoyed the U2 performance a lot, but they didn’t take home Oscars, losing out to the song “Let It Go” from the Disney movie Frozen. And my wife and I actually tied in the Oscar pool, so we’ll end up taking each other out for a nice dinner in the very near future, but my mac and cheese didn’t disappoint. My wife even liked it. It was the big winner.
