Something really cool happened this weekend. Really cool.
It’s Lloyd Dobler with a boom box! Photo courtesy of Timothy Norris.
Peter Gabriel performed a concert at the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night and Lloyd Dobler John Cusack made a surprise appearance with a boom box. So, what’s the big deal? Well, the movie “Say Anything…” is one of my favorites, and maybe more importantly, one of the reasons why I wanted to become a screenwriter. That movie will always be an inspiration to me.
If you haven’t seen “Say Anything…” please do yourself a favor and check it out. It’s a wonderfully sweet, smart and original story about love and heartbreak. Cusack’s sensitive and comical portrayal of hopeless teenaged romantic Lloyd Dobler and his boom box became an iconic cinematic figure.
So, when I learned about this from Cameron Crowe’s tweet and later got it confirmed by my wife — who had a friend witness it first-hand — I thought it may have been the coolest thing that had ever happened in the history of the world.
Even Cameron Crowe thought it was cool.
I’m sorry I missed the concert but I’m so happy that it actually happened.
In the original first draft of the script, I remember Cameron had written in Billy Idol’s “To Be a Lover” instead of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Something to think about.
